COVER STORY
B.J. Edwards, C.A. Migliorati
The authors conduct a MEDLINE search of the
medical and dental literature with the objective of
reviewing osteoporosis, its effect on public health in the
U.S. population and the implications in providing dental
care for patients with osteoporosis.
Osteoporosis is a common disease in middle-aged and older
Americans. The risk of sustaining fractures is a concern,
and mortality rates after hip or vertebral fractures are
high. Oral health maintenance for adults with osteoporosis
is important.....

Dr. Michalowicz and colleagues compare
safety outcomes from a trial in which pregnant women
received scaling and root planing and other dental
treatments.
Although clinicians generally consider it safe to provide
dental care for pregnant women, supporting clinical trial
evidence is lacking. This study compares safety outcomes
from a trial in which pregnant women received scaling and
root planing and other dental treatments.........
CLINICAL PRACTICE
V. Thompson, R.G. Craig, F.A. Curro, W.S. Green, J.A. Ship
The authors conduct a traditional critical review
of studies comparing partial caries removal or stepwise
excavation with complete removal of infected tissue from
deep carious lesions.
The classical approach to treatment of deep carious lesions
approaching the pulp mandates removing all infected and
affected dentin. Several studies call this approach into
question.......

Silva-Sousa, M.D. Sousa-Neto
The authors describe a clinical case of a diagnosis of
dentinogenesis imperfecta, in which a medical history review
combined with an analysis of dental alterations led to
indications of osteogenesis imperfecta involvement.
Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI), also known as “brittle bone
disease,” can be difficult to diagnose in its mild form. The
authors describe a clinical case of a diagnosis of
dentinogenesis imperfect (DI), in which a literature review
combined with an analysis of dental alterations led to
indications of OI involvement.
RESEARCH
D. Saraç, B. Bulucu, Y.S. Saraç, S. Kulunk
The authors investigate the effects of dentin
cleaning techniques and etching systems on the bond strength
of adhesive resin cement.
Provisional cement remnants on dentin affect the bond
strength of resin cements to dentin. The authors
investigated the effects of dentin-cleaning agents and
etching systems on the bond strength of adhesive resin
cement.
